Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Sutherland, 93, of Anchorage, Alaska, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at her home.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church in Douds, with the Rev. Curt Pollock officiating. Burial of cremains will be in Mt. Moriah Cemetery north of Douds.

The family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be made to Christ United Methodist Church and brought to the service or mailed to the family at PO Box 163, Douds 52551.

Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sutherland was born Nov. 22, 1910, in Douds, the daughter of Roscoe and Elizabeth Doud Pollock. She married Warren George Sutherland in 1954. He died in 1971.

Mrs. Sutherland was a graduate of Douds-Leando High School and University of Iowa. She taught school in Douds, Sargeant Bluff and Jefferson, all in Iowa, and in Ely, Minn.

She moved to Anchorage in 1948. For a number of years, she supervised and produced all the Anchorage High School dramatic productions. Then, she taught senior English classes.

After her retirement in 1976, Mrs. Sutherland remained in her Turnagain home, where she lived for more than 40 years.

She was interested in the arts, both music and drama, and participated in Anchorage community theater. She played bridge and was a member of the duplicate bridge club for many years. She was a 50-year member of Twin City Chapter Order of Eastern Star and John Hyson Reneker Unit of the American Legion Auxiliary in Douds. She also belonged to Pioneers of Alaska Auxiliary No. 4 and Delta Kappa Gamma.

Mrs. Sutherland was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Anchorage.

Survivors include one brother, Davis E. Pollock of Douds.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, John, Robert and Larry Pollock.
