Janet K. GUSTASON HONG

Janet K. GUSTASON HONG, 65, of Iowa City, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at her home.

A memorial service was held Thursday in Iowa City, and family committal services took place at Oakland Cemetery in Iowa City.

Mrs. GUSTASON (sic - Mrs. HONG) was born April 26, 1949, in Fairfield, the daughter of James and Harriett ANGSTEAD GUSTASON. She married her first husband, Thomas HOLMES, June 28, 1969. She married Derek HONG Sept. 16, 1992, in Los Angeles.

She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1967 and went on to attend the University of Iowa where she earned her bachelor degree in English and education in 1971 and, after a several-year hiatus, she returned to the university's School of Law to earn her Juris Doctor in 1989.

After graduating from college, Mrs. HONG had a storied career in several fields. She taught fifth-grade science, operated a home daycare, and for many years, was a newspaper reporter/editor for several local newspapers.

After graduating from law school, she practiced law in California for three years. After returning to Iowa in 1992, she continued to practice law and became one of the most respected experts of consumer bankruptcy and foreclosure law in the state. She operated her own solo law practice in Cedar Rapids for several years, and then joined the Lynch Dallas law firm in Cedar Rapids for several more years. In 2007, she and her husband opened their own law firm, Hong Law PLC, with offices in Iowa City and Cedar Rapids.

Survivors include: her husband, Derek; children, Oliver HOLMES of Iowa City, Sylvia HOLMES of Moab, Utah, Emily HOLMES of Chicago, William HOLMES of Seattle, Jessica HOLMES of Phoenix, Randall HOLMES and wife, Bora PLAKU of Stanford, California, and James HOLMES of Mesa, Arizona; mother, Harriett GUSTASON of Freeport, Illinois; three grandchildren; and siblings, Mary Anne JANSSEN of Lanark, Illinois, Margaret MAJORS of Fort Atkins, Wisconsin, and David GUSTASON of Lena, Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her father, James; and one brother, Randall.
