Gladys Spayde, 85, of Iowa City and formerly of Fairfield, died Monday, May 3, 2004, at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church in Iowa City. Private burial of cremated remains will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, by family request, memorials can be directed to the Education Foundation of the Fairfield Public Schools.

Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Spayde was born Sept. 27, 1918, in Fargo, N.D., the daughter of John and Ida Siljenberg Carlson. She married Sydney Spayde Sept. 8, 1950, in Hisega, S.D.

She received a bachelors degree in speech from the University of South Dakota in 1939. A stage actress, she appeared in many plays in summer stock and community theater. In 1945 and 1946 she toured American military installations in Europe and North Africa with USO camp shows. Later she performed with the acting companies, Black Hills Playhouse and Penn Players, and in community theaters in Grand Rapids, Mich., Kalamazoo, Mich., and Canton, Ohio.

Mrs. Spayde was a speech educator in Fairfield schools for more than 20 years, retiring in 1983.

She moved to Iowa City in 1984, where she was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.

She was a member of Chapter JF, P.E.O., the Music Study Club and Entre Nous and was an alumna of Alpha Xi Delta.

Survivors include one son, Jon Spayde and wife Laurie Phillips of St. Paul, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and one brother.
