Lloyd E. CLAYTON, 94, 801 South D St., died at Jefferson County Hospital Friday evening, June 28, 1991.
A former Jefferson County engineer for 18 years, he had retired in 1966 and moved to Sun City, Ariz. He returned to Fairfield in 1977 to make his home with his daughter, Marni MELLEN.
CLAYTON was born May 20, 1897, in Macedonia, the son of Matilda KNOX and Marion CLAYTON. His stepfather was Frank PERKS. The family lived in Washington state and in Imperial, Neb. He was graduated from high school at Macedonia when he was 15, and later from Iowa State University in civil engineering.
He was a lieutenant in the Army Engineers in World War I with service in France and was lieutenant colonel and battalion commander of the 335th Engineers in World War II in the Mediterranean theater.
He was married to Celia Mary BEYER in McGregor in 1922.
As an engineer, he was with the Iowa State Highway Department for several years and had been in private business as a consulting engineer. He had been engineer at Tama County as well as in Jefferson County, where he was credited for a road program which put every farm home on a surfaced road. He was Jefferson County engineer from 1947 to 1966.
He was a member of the Jefferson County Hospital Board of Trustees through two building projects, was a director of the Fairfield Development Corp., and received an "outstanding citizen" award from the chamber of commerce.
CLAYTON was an elder in the First Presbyterian Church and had been an elder in other Presbyterian churches in Iowa. He was a 32nd-degree Mason and district lecturer, a lifetime member of the Consistory at Cedar Rapids, and a member of the Kaaba Temple Shrine. he also was a member of Rotary and the Elks.
He is survived by one daughter, Marni MELLEN of Fairfield; one granddaughter, Darcy MELLEN-SULLIVAN, and one great-grandson, John SULLIVAN III, of Grosse Point, Mich.; and one half-sister, Fredalee MILLER of Denver, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one sister, one brother and one half-brother.
The body will be cremated with inurnment in Sun City, Ariz. A memorial service tentatively is planned for July 8. Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
