Robert W. HARGRAVE

Robert W. HARGRAVE, 94 of Evansville, IN former President of Citizen's National Bank and Holding Company passed away Monday, July 28, 2014 at Altria Senior Living Center. Robert was born on May 8, 1920 in Evansville, IN to Erma and Jasper HARGRAVE.

Those that knew Bob know that the foundation of his life was built on his firm belief in God, his love of his family, his determination to speak positively about those around him and his joy for life.

From an early age Bob felt that personal accountability was the most positive reflection he could have for his family. This work ethic led to academically consistent high honors and a storied sports career.

As a quarterback Bob led Memorial High School Football team to back to back undefeated seasons in 1936 and 1937 and a national championship in 1937.

He was provided a scholarship to the University of Notre Dame where he lettered in football and baseball. His accomplishments on the field for Notre Dame led to All-American recognition in 1940 for football. He was later induction (sic) into the Indiana Football Hall of Fame for his overall career achievements. In 2012 he was inducted into the Inaugural Memorial Sports Hall of Fame.

After college he enlisted in the Navy where he was commissioned as an officer served in the Pacific theater (sic)

During his senior year at Notre Dame he agreed to a blind date with Florence MOLYNEAUX and continued that 'Date of a Lifetime" for the next 64 years. Bob and Floatie were married in San Francisco Nov. 11 1944. After WWII they briefly lived in Chicago, her home town, then moved to Evansville in 1949 when Bob was recruited to work at Citizen's National Bank in their trust department. Seven children filled their busy lives and their hearts. During this time he became "Coach" to many of the Christ the King football teams.

Some of Bob's activities and involvements included the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Merit Board, Memorial Booster Club, Honorary Co-Chair of the 2014 Memorial Capital Campaign, The Quarterback Club, St. Mary's Hospital Foundation Board, Christ the King Finance Committee, Evansville Kennel Club and Evansville Country Club.

Bob is survived by his Son, Robert Jr. (Kip) and his wife Terri HARGRAVE, of Syracuse, NY; Daughter, Chris and her husband, Stu WOLFF of Richmond, VA; Son, Tom and his wife Mary HARGRAVE of Orlando, FLZ; Daughter, Susie and her husband, Doug BELL of Evansville, IN; Daughter-in-law, Anne HARGRAVE of Iowa City, IA; Son, Mike and wife Deborah HARGRAVE of Charlotte, NC; Daughter, Jane and her husband Tim McMAHON of Fairfield, IA; Grandchildren, Maggie, Annie, and Gus HARGRAVE; Dori, Alison and Courtney WOLFF, Dan, Ryan, Kelly, Nick and A.J. HARGRAVE, Molly, Lainey and Gus BELL, Erin, Shaun and Meghan HARGRAVE, Rachel and Sarah HARGRAVE, Connor, Kyle and Abby McMAHON and 16 Grandchildren (sic - great-grandchildren?).

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Floatie, his parents and beloved son John HARGRAVE (1945-1990).

Visitation will be Friday, August 1, 2:00-8:00 pm at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, with a Memorial Service held at 7:30 pm. Visitation will continue from 9:30-10:00 am Saturday at Christ the King Catholic Church, 3101 Bayard Park Dr., Evansville, IN 47714.

Funeral service will begin at 10:00 am Saturday, August 2, 2014 at the church with Father Ted Temple and Father Alex Zenthoffer officiating.

Entombment will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 3010 E. Chandler Ave. Evansville, IN. 47714 or Reitz Memorial High School Fund, 1500 Lincoln Ave. Evansville, IN. 47714
