Services Wednesday for 'Shorty' NELSON

The funeral service for Ernest "Shorty" NELSON will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clair Odell and the Rev. Jerry Miller officiating. The casket will be closed.

Burial will be in the Packwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends between 7-8 tonight at the Raymond Funeral Home. The family requests that memorials be left to the Packwood Community Center, Fairfield First United Methodist Church or the Iowa Heart Association.

NELSON, 66, of 1009 Southview Drive, was killed Monday morning in a car-truck crash two miles west of Fairfield.

NELSON was born Aug. 16, 1920, in Packwood, the son of Ed and Alma JOHNSON NELSON. A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, NELSON farmed near Packwood for 35 years before moving to Fairfield in 1974.

He had been a member of the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors for 10 years, including five years as chairman. He served on the state and county mental health board, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Fairfield Elks Lodge and Republican Central Committee.

NELSON married Kathleen MOORE on May 31, 1941, in Macon, Mo. He is survived by his wife, daughter Yolanda MYERS of Packwood, son Allen of Fairfield and one brother Leland of Dallas. He was preceded in death by his son Hollis Aug. 31, 1968, two daughters in infancy, his parents and one sister.
