Funeral director Weston BEHNER dies

Longtime local funeral director Weston F. BEHNER died today at Jefferson County Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Services have been set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

BEHNER, 80, had operated Behner Funeral Home at 203 S. Main St., for 52 years.

He had been working in the same location for 57 years, starting his career as an undertaker with Campbell's Funeral Home from Feb. 15, 1930, to April 1, 1936. He graduated from the Hohensehuh-Carpenter College for Embalming in St. Louis in 1932, served his apprenticeship under H. P. Campbell, and bought the business at 203 S. Main St., in 1936.

Behner was born Oct. 17, 1906, in Birmingham, the son of the Rev. F. C. and Emma Josephine CRITCHFIELD BEHNER. He graduated from Birmingham High School in 1927. He lived on a farm near Birmingham for three years before beginning his career in Fairfield.

BEHNER was a member of the First United Methodist Church; Fairfield Rotary Club, which he served as president in 1957; Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 1927; Masonic Lodge-Clinton No. 15; Independent Order of Oddfellows, past noble grand; Iowa Funeral Directors Association, which he had been a member of for 50 years; the Funeral National Directors Association; Knights of Pythias, past chancellor; and the Illinois Funeral Directors Association.

He was a talented carpenter and loved the farm and livestock. BEHNER enjoyed all sports and watching local athletic events and the Iowa Hawkeyes.

He is survived by one son, Fred; a sister, Bernice WEBER of Donnellson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one sister, Alta MILLER, and one brother, Albert J. BEHNER.

Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Behner Funeral Home by Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 15. Friends may call at the funeral home beginning at noon Thursday. Family visitation will begin at 7 p.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Fairfield Rotary Club, First Methodist Church and the Fairfield High School athletic department.
