Portia Mae HARPER LONG

Portia Mae HARPER LONG, 89, of Fairfield and Bradenton, Fla., died Sunday, Feb. 21, 1993, at Blake Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.

The service tentatively is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Raymond Funeral Home. Memorials have been established to Memorial Fund, First United Methodist Church, Youth for Christ; American Red Cross; and the Salvation Army.

Mrs. LONG was born May 18, 1903, in Fairfield, the daughter of A.K. and Beatrice BROWN HARPER. She grew up in Fairfield, attended local schools, graduated from Parsons College and later attended Biblical Seminary, formerly White Biblical Seminary, in New York. On Aug. 28, 1930, she married Maurice K. "Shorty" LONG at her parents' home in Fairfield. The couple lived in Fairfield until 1975 when they moved to Florida. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a life member of United Methodist Women, was active in youth work, opened her home to Youth For Christ and supported YFC work in other ways. She worked with the Red Cross and served as a Gray Lady at Jefferson County Hospital, where she was honored for more than 40 years of service.

Surviving are her husband; three sons, Stan of Winona Lake, Ind., Dick of Pueblo, Colo., Ron of Fairfield; nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Two brothers, Paul HARPER, Dale HARPER, and a grandson preceded her in death.
