Ralph Moore TURNER, 86, 801 Highland St., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1993, at Jefferson County Hospital.
TURNER was born Sept. 29, 1907, in Yokahama, Japan, where his father was directing an engineering project. He was reared in Schenectady, N.Y., and graduated from Bethlehem, Pa., and in 1929 from the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri.
He was married in 1925 to Virginia VENABLE, and the two worked together as journalists in Paris and on various newspapers, including New Bedford, Mass., and Long Branch, N.J.
He joined the staff of the Schenectady Gazette in 1936, where he served as chief editorial writer and editorial page editor until his retirement in 1977. During his career in Schnectady he was one of the first television news broadcasters in the new medium and developed techniques for visual news that became standard television practice.
In his retirement, TURNER turned to his avocation in music, playing piano in professional bands. He was active in the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing, and participated in national competitions and concerts.
He and his wife moved to Fairfield in 1987 where they made their home with their son, Ralph C. TURNER. After a stroke which left him nearly blind, TURNER continued an active life, writing a series of "I Remember" columns for the Fairfield Ledger, and playing piano for long-term care residents of Jefferson County Hospital, as well as for monthly country-music jam sessions at Selma and for various Fairfield events.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, Ralph C. TURNER of Fairfield and Paul V. TURNER of San Francisco.
