Derrald John 'DJ' MARTIN

Derrald John "DJ" MARTIN, 95, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, Feb. 28, 2014, at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant.

A funeral is at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant. Interment with military rites will be at Forest Home Cemetery (note: in Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co, IA).

Visitation with a closed casket is noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the memorial chapel.

Memorials have been established for Midwest Old Threshers and the Avenue of Flags Veteran's Memorial.

Mr. MARTIN was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Jefferson County, the son of Warren and Susanna CRENSHAW MARTIN. He married Edna McLAUGHLIN Jan. 6, 1942, in Burlington. She preceded him in death on Nov. 28, 1999.

He was raised in Mt. Pleasant, and was a 1937 graduate of Mt. Pleasant Community High School. He served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1946 during World War II.

He continued his military service in the Iowa National Guard from 1948 to 1969, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He was employed by the Continental Oil Company in 1946. That year he became a jobber and took over his uncle's bulk route.

In 1951, he became a jobber for Conoco.

He built a service station on the corner of Washington and Cherry streets, Mt. Pleasant, in 1953, where the Pep Stop is now located.

He worked in the oil business for 33 years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks Lodge No. 1192 in Fairfield since 1950.

He also was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 2561 in Mt. Pleasant, where he helped establish the Avenue of Flags.

He loved working in his yard as well as being an antique car collector.

Prior to his wife's death, the MARTINs enjoyed spending their winters in Harlingen, Texas.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, and a special companion, Patsy Neff.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Herman MARTIN; and two sisters, Lucille GRABER and Leona McKEE.
