Bertha KURTZ BERNDT, 92, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Woodland Terrace Assisted Living facility in Cary, N.C.
A funeral Mass will be held at a later date at St. Joseph's Church in East Pleasant Plain. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Memorials donations may be made to St. Michael's Catholic Church, 17151 88th Ave., Coopersville, MI 49404.

Mrs. BERNDT was born on the family farm in Jefferson County, the daughter of Joseph and Veronica KURTZ. She married Edward BERNDT Dec. 23, 1968.
She graduated from Pleasant Plain High School and Ottumwa Business College.
She was employed in secretarial positions at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, in Des Moines, and at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, until her retirement in 1968. She also worked at the Muskegon wastewater treatment plant in Michigan.
She and her husband lived in Charles City and Muskegon, Mich., and Coopersville, Mich. They moved to Cary, N.C., in 2011 to be closer to family.
She was a devoted wife. She was proud of her Iowa heritage and that she had visited all 50 states. She had a keen interest in her family's history and was the family historian. She had many interests and hobbies. She loved to travel, knit, sew, bake pies, try new recipes, and can and freeze fruits and vegetables.
She and her husband enjoyed fishing and traveling in the U.S., Europe and Costa Rica.
Survivors include five nieces and one nephew.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward; her parents; two sisters, Bernetta KURTZ and Leona KRON; and one brother, Paul KURTZ.

Bertha KURTZ BERNDT, 92, died Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Woodland Terrace Assisted Living Facility in Cary, North Carolina.
A funeral Mass is planned at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, with the Rev. Robert Striegel officiating. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
The family will greet friends for one hour immediately preceding the service beginning at 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Memorials for St. Joseph Cemetery Association can be left at the church or mailed to the family: John BERNDT, 205 Homestead Drive, Cary, NC 27513.
Gould Funeral Home of Brighton is assisting the family with local arrangements.
Mrs. BERNDT was born July 31, 1921, at the family home on their farm in Jefferson County, the daughter of Joseph and Veronica FRITZ KURTZ. She married Edward BERNDT Dec. 26, 1968, in Cedar Rapids. He is deceased.
She graduated from Pleasant Plain High School in 1938 and Ottumwa Business College in 1940.
She and her husband lived in Charles City and Muskegon, Michigan, before moving to Coopersville, Michigan, where they lived for many years. They moved to Cary, North Carolina, in 2011 to be closer to family.

In addition to her husand, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Bernetta KURTZ and Leona KRON; and one brother, Paul KURTZ.
