Robert L. GAMRATH, 94, of Fairfield, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at Parkview Care Center.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Robert L. GAMRATH

Robert L. GAMRATH, 94, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.

No visitation is scheduled.

Burial, with military honors, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Fairfield, with the Rev. Joe Phipps officiating.

The family will greet the people at the church before the memorial service. A reception is planned following the service for family and friends at Fairfield Golf & Country Club.

Memorials may be made to Evergreen Cemetery and First Presbyterian Church.

Arrangements are in the care of Raymond Funeral Home in Fairfield.

Mr. GAMRATH was born July 25, 1919, at Sioux City, the son of Carl L. amd Mabel MOBURG GAMRATH. He married Evelyn WATTS May 30, 1941.

He made his home in Fairfield since age of 6 months. His education included American Institute of Commerce, Parsons College and several military schools, including Command and General Staff College.

Mr. GAMRATH entered the insurance business Feb. 1, 1946. Gamrath-Doyle and Associates Inc. now operates offices in Fairfield and Mt. Pleasant.

A longtime member of the Iowa National Guard, GAMRATH was the states's (sic) senior troop commander when he retired in 1969, with the rank of brigadier general. His military service, including duty in World War II, totaled 29 years.

After WWII, he began a long period of community service when he was elected to the Fairfield City Council. He helped implement the city's first planning and zoning board. He served as chairman of the city board of review. As a Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce director, he was instrumental in securing natural gas service for Fairfield. He also was one of three members of the Fairfield Economic Development Association who planned and organized the present Development Park.

In 1969, Mr. GAMRATH was named Fairfield's "Man of the Year." He was inducted into Fairfield High School Wall of Honor in 2006 and Parsons College Wall of Honor in 2010.

For many years, he served on both the Parsons College Board of Trustees and the State Armory Board.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, a director of Evergreen Cemetery Association, and a member of Rotary Club, Elks Lodge, American Legion, Abracadabra, Wit and Wisdom Club and Fairfield Golf & Country Club.

Survivors include his wife; children: Robert L. GAMRATH and wife Karen of Lake Bluff, Ill.; Kathryn CARPENTER and husband Dan of Garland, Texas, Nan PARKS of Chicago, and Thomas GAMRATH of Fairfield; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Carl W. GAMRATH; and sister Lois COMPTON.
