Harry G. WOOD

BATAVIA - Harry G. WOOD, 89, of Batavia, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1993, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

The service will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Batavia United Methodist Church with the Rev. Thomas Clark officiating. Burial will be in Batavia Cemetery. Open visitation begins at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Campbell-Kremer Funeral Home in Batavia, where a masonic service will be held at 7 that night, followed by family visitation from 7:30 to 8:30. A memorial has been established to Batavia United Methodist Church.

WOOD was born Oct. 30, 1903, in Keokuk County, the son of John R. and Sarah C. RUGGLES WOOD. He was reared and educated in Martinsburg, graduating from Martinsburg High School in 1922. On July 17, 1929, he married Dorothy E. MILLER at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He attended Iowa State Teachers College and in 1933 received a bachelor of science degree from Parsons College. He received a master's degree from Drake University in Des Moines in 1952. He taught in Martinsburg, Selma, Batavia and Cardinal schools and was superintendent of Batavia Schools from 1944 until they closed. He later became Cardinal Elementary School supervisor, a position he held until retiring in 1971. He represented southeast Iowa for 15 years on the Iowa High School Athletic Association and was chairman of its election board for five years. He served on judicial committees responsible for selection of grand and petit jurors. He was a member of Batavia United Methodist Church, Kilwinning Masonic Lodge 198 at Batavia, past worthy patron of Arbor Vitae Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, a member of Iowa State Education Association, Elementry Principals of Iowa, and past president, secretary and treasurer of the Jefferson County Six and JaWake leagues.

Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Beverly HAMILTON of Ottumwa, Betty JEFFREY of Des Moines; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A sister, Ethel, four brothers, Walter, Charlie, Howard and Ned, and a grandson preceded him in death.
