Gene M. Steele, 69, of rural Bloomfield died at 12:35 p.m. Friday, March 19, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Phil Campbell officiating. Burial will be in Jay Cemetery south of Floris.

Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with family present from 7-8 p.m.

Memorials to Bethel Worship Center may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 15346 Quince Blvd, Bloomfield 52537.

Mr. Steele was born June 22, 1934, in Ottumwa, the son of William Mark and Faye Black Steele. He married Betty J. Stone Nov. 24, 1956, in Troy Methodist Church.

He grew up in Wapello and Van Buren counties and attended Douds High School.

He farmed in the Floris community, worked at heavy construction and as a finish carpenter. He also served in the United States Army from 1957-1959.

He was a member of Local 767 United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, American Association of Retired Persons and National Rifle Association.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Gene L. Steele of Bloomfield; and two brothers, Herman Steele of Texarkana, Texas, and Lee Steele of Walnut Creek, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Icyphene Steen; and three brothers, Frank, Herbert and Harry Steele.
