Virdie WALKER MATHERLY SOMERS

Virdie Corinne WALKER MATHERLY SOMERS, 93, of Fairfield died on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at SunnyBrook Living Care Center in Fairfield.

Virdie was born on Dec. 8, 1920, in Richmond, California, the daughter of Nellie ROBERTSON WALKER and Walter Leigh WALKER. She married Guy H. MATHERLY on May 21, 1939 in Long Beach, California. He died on July 30, 1970. She married Nick SOMERS on March 3, 1973 in Reno, Nevada. He died on March 31, 2003.

Virdie graduated from Poly High School in Long Beach, CA and went on to attend and graduate from Woodbury Business College in Los Angeles, CA.

For many years, Virdie worked from home as a private, executive secretary for her husband, Guy MATHERLY's real estate, masonry and stone quarry businesses in Yermo, CA. Later, when her children were grown, she worked for the Barstow Unified School and the Palo Alto Community School Districts as an executive secretary, and administrative assistant respectively.

She was first and foremost a loving mother and homemaker. Virdie was the church pianist for 20 years. She was a Cub Scout den mother for her sons and a Brownie Scout leader for her daughters. Her hobbies included tap and ballroom dancing, and camping and fishing with her family in the High Sierra's (sic) of California.

Perhaps her greatest joy was playing the piano and making music with and for her family and friends.

She was a founding member of the First Congregational Church of Yermo, CA and attended the Liberal Catholic Church of Fairfield after moving from California to Iowa in 2003 to be with her daughters.

Survivors include her son, Thomas Guy MATHERLY of Lompoc, CA, daughter, Patricia MATHERLY DOLLIVE of Fairfield, IA and daughter, Nancy MATHERLY GREEN of Fairfield, IA, grandchildren: Laura MATHERLY CHRISTENSEN, Norma MATHERLY, Maureen MATHERLY, Guy H. MATHERLY II, Sara Corinne MATHERLY, James Thomas MATHERLY, Keenan Reed BLACK, and Raina Kathryn DOLLIVE; stepchildren: Henry SOMADUROFF, Susie SOMERS and Nick SOMERS, and many great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husbands, Guy and Nick, she was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Risdom Walter WALKER, her granddaughter, Patricia Joy BLACK, and her eldest son, Walter Edward MATHERLY.
