“OBITUARY. Mrs. Mahala Peters Moffitt died at Estherville February 19th, in her eighty-seventh year [86 yrs 6 ms 12 ds]. She was born in Washington County, Ken., August 7th, 1813. At the age of seven she removed with her parents to Sangamon County, Ill., where she was reared, and united in marriage with George Moffitt in 1835. Soon after this she went with her husband to Mt. Pleasant, which contained but one log cabin and was almost entirely surrounded by Indians. For six months she was the only white woman in Mt. Pleasant. After two years she moved to a farm in Jefferson County, near Glasgow, where she remained until 1856. While there seven children were born to them, four dying in childhood. A son now living in Colorado, a daughter living in Smith county, Kan., and Mrs. Case of Estherville survive her. In 1856 they emigrated to Macon County, Mo., where they remained until 1862, when on account of the war, it became unsafe for them to remain longer. They returned to Jefferson County and again located on a farm. Here her husband died September 25th, 1865. Until 1882 (?) [1892 written in margin] she remained on the same farm with her daughter, Mrs. Case, with whom she moved to Emmet county in that year. She had met and conversed with Abraham Lincoln, Stephen A. Douglas and Peter Cartwright, who frequently preached at her father’s house.” Buried at Estherville, Oak Hill Cemetery.”
