“DEATH OF SMITH BALL…..a pioneer settler of Jefferson County, occurred at his home in this city Saturday night…..He was on the street the Wednesday preceding his death. Mr. Ball was a resident of Jefferson County for more than half a century. He came to Iowa first in 1839, and after a brief residence in Mt. Pleasant, located in Round Prairie township in April of the following year. He led the life of a farmer, prospered and acquired a competence, until 1883, when he removed to this city. Mr. Ball was born in Madison County, Kentucky, July 29th, 1810. His earlier life was spent in that state, but in 1829 he removed to Sangamon County, Ill., where he resided until he came to Iowa. He was married in Kentucky, in 1837, to Rebecca Moffett, who survives him, and the aged couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in this city three years ago. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ball, six of whom are now living. George W. is an attorney residing in Iowa City; Lewis C. and Frank P. are farmers; Ann is the wife of William Case, Melissa of George B. Phillips, and Cassandra of Richard Fisher, and all live in the southeastern portion of this county. Deceased had been a member of the Christian Church for many years. He was a man of the strictest honesty and integrity and lived a model life in all his relations with his fellow men…..Funeral services were held in this city Monday, conducted by Rev. C. L. Stafford of Ottumwa, and the remains were taken to Round Prairie township for interment.”
