“DEATH OF MRS. PHILLIPS. 1813-1900 - - two dates - - as it were two parenthetical marks - - enclosing a long and useful life, for what is the longest earthly life but a parenthesis between the cradle and the grave. September 10th 1813, Miriam Degroot was born, and she died near Glasgow, September 22d, 1900. She was married to Rev. W. H. Phillips May 23d 1830, at Ft. Wayne, Ind., soon after removed to Ohio, and thence to Iowa in 1849. Twelve children, six sons and six daughters, were born to them, four of whom have passed away. Two sons and six daughters…..mourn her loss…..The funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. Lee at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. S. Fry, and the remains were interred at the Mt. Zion church. A large picture which added solemnity to the occasion was hanging in the room where the remains rested in the coffin. It represented five generations of the Phillips family, with this good woman seated at the head. Sometimes in summer the setting sun paints the sky with radiant colors and leaves an after glow which does not fade into the blackness of night, but passing slowly to the east is united with the glory of the new day. So the lives of the good may sink beneath the horizon, yet they leave an after glow which fades not, but remains cheering and warming many hearts until at last it is blended and lost in the light of the glory of the coming of Christ. Mrs. Phillips was a good woman and the after glow of her life will cheer and comfort many hearts.”
