Harlan James Horras
March 11, 2004Harlan James Horras, 71, of rural Fairfield died at his home Wednesday, March 10, 2004.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church. Monsignor Francis Hendricksen and the Rev. Stephen Page will be co-celebrants at the Mass. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
Visitation, with the family present will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Friday at Raymond Funeral Home. Prayers for a Christian wake will be at 6:30 p.m., preceding the family visitation.
Mr. Horras had asked for memorials to be made to the Fairfield Trojan Booster Club or the American Cancer Society.
Mr. Horras was born May 12, 1932, in Keokuk County, the son of Alva and Teresa Buch Horras. He married Mary Margaret Barron July 10, 1954, in Weller.
A graduate of Fairfield High School, he served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. He returned home to Jefferson County in 1954, joining his family in the operation of Sunrise Dairy. Following the closing of the dairy in 1962, he continued on the same farm as a farmer and cattle feeder for the remainder of his life. He and son Jim operated Horras & Company Auctioneers from 1985 to 1998.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church. He was a past leader of the Packwood Trojans 4-H CLub and served several terms on the Fairfield High School FFA Advisory Council. He was a steering committee member for the organization of the Jefferson County Cattleman's Association, has been an active member of the Fairfield Trojan Booster Club and a member of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks 1192.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Jim Horras and wife Nancy of Fairfield, Nick Horras and wife Lourie of Davenport, Dave Horras and wife Pam of Byron, Ill., and Gary Horras and wife Mary of DeForest, Wisc.; two daughters, Kathy McVeigh and husband Rick of Marion and Connie Allen and husband Brian of Fort Dodge; 16 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Maxine Walker of Highland, Calif., and Ruth Knight of Hot Springs Village, Ark.; and one brother, Homer Horras of Mission, Texas.
