March 12, 2004Rex E. Thommen, 84, of Mount Sterling died at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004, at home.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial will be in Harness Cemetery in Mount Sterling.
Visitation will open at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with family present from 3-5 p.m.
Memorials to Harness Cemetery or the city of Mount Vernon for street signs may be left at the funeral home or mailed to the family at 303 Third St., Mount Sterling 52573.
Mr. Thommen was born July 1, 1919, in Moravia, the son of Pearl F. and Isabelle Tracey Thommen. He married Esther A. Taylor Dec. 10, 1938, at Kahoka, Mo. She died July 30, 2001.
He grew up in Bible Grove, Mo.; lived in Clinton and Cantril; farmed in Scotland County, Mo.; and retired to Mount Sterling.
As a young man, he and his father owned and operated a river boat on the Mississippi River. They later owned and operated a grocery store-locker plant and a hardware-implement store, both in Cantril.
He has been a city council member in Cantril and Mount Sterling, had been the fire chief in Cantril and was a long-time trustee of Harness Cemetery.
Survivors include one son, Donald Thommen of Vancouver, Wash.; two daughters, Shirley Farrell of Carman, Ill., and Linda Corman of Mount Sterling; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; four brothers, Clyde Thommen of Salem, Ore., Chester Thommen, also in Oregon, Russell Thommen of Dallas, Ore., and Max Thommen of Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Delores Godwin of Lakehurst, N.J.
He was preceded in death by infant twin daughters, Connie and Bonnie Thommen.
