James Daniel Young
March 12, 2004James Daniel Young, 85, of SunnyBrook Assisted Living, 3000 W. Madison Ave., died at 12:24 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Jefferson County Hospital.
A private family interment of ashes will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Young had donated his body to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., for cancer research. He had been a part of a special liver cancer research program at Mayo.
A gathering of family and friends will be held from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at SunnyBrook Assisted Living.
Memorials have been established to the Iowa Department of the Blind and to Fairfield Public Library for books-on-tape.
Arrangements are in the care of Raymond Funeral Home.
Mr. Young was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Fairfield, the son of James and Elizabeth Schafer Young. He married Catherine Bishop Aug. 24, 1940, at the First United Methodist Church parsonage in Fairfield.
Mr. Young was a lifetime resident of Fairfield, graduating from Fairfield High School in 1938. He attended Parsons College for two years.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps for three years during World War II.
He worked in the monument business for more than 60 years and operated Young Monument Company in Fairfield until his retirement.
Mr. Young was a member of First United Methodist Church for 66 years.
He also was a member of the Elks Lodge, Eagles Club, VFW, American Legion and Walton Club.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Danella Van Tasell and husband Stephen of Fairfield and Kathy Davis and husband Ross of Indianola, Miss.; five grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Charles, Warren and William Young.
