Fairfield city offices to close Friday in memory of employee

Some Fairfield city buildings and departments will be closed Friday in honor of Larry HANSHAW, who died Monday.

HANSHAW, a wastewater facility employee, had been at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics since Nov. 26 after suffering a major head injury on the job.

The city offices and departments that will close in his memory are city hall, the streets department, the water department and the wastewater department.

HANSHAW's funeral is at 10 a.m. Friday at First Church of God in Brighton with the Rev. Ryan Meader officiating.

See page 6 for HANSHAW's full obituary.

City administrator Kevin Flanagan said in November the incident that sent HANSHAW to the hospital occurred on the grounds of the wastewater treatment facility. HANSHAW and two other wastewater employees were disposing of a brush pile at the site. Before the city opened its yard waste site on South 20th Street earlier this year, people in town took their yard waste to the wastewater treatment facility.

The employees were burning the brush that remained at the site. When the employees were cleaning up the remnants of the fire, HANSHAW threw a seemingly empty plastic container onto a debris pile. Flanagan said the container used to hold diesel fuel and may have contained gasoline fumes. He said pressure built up inside the container and when it was released the container shot back at HANSHAW, striking him in the face.

The Fairfield City Council paid tribute to HANSHAW Monday by holding a moment of silence for him at the beginning of its meeting.
