Death Takes R.C. NORMAN, 79

R.C. NORMAN, 55 Forest Drive, retired Fairfield business and community leader, died Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at the Jefferson County Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was 79.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. David Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Tuesday evening from 7:30 to 8:30.

During his 53 years in Fairfield NORMAN had two separate and successful business careers. He was the first manager of the local J.C. Penney Store, serving in that position from 1924 until his retirement in 1957.

Less than two years later he joined the Jefferson Savings and Loan Association, heading that firm during the period of its biggest growth.

NORMAN was born Nov. 17, 1897 in Hurley, S.D., the son of J.P.C. and Sarah JACOBSON NORMAN. He moved to Richfield, Utah, with his parents at the age of 13, attending public schools there. He joined the Penney Company as a clerk in the Richfield store, later serving store in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, and Gunnison, Utah, before coming to Fairfield.

A charter member of the Chamber of Commerce, he filled numerous offices in that organization. He was honored as Fairfield's "Man of the Year" for 1956.

NORMAN began his association with the Savings and Loan Association when he was named to assist the late Harry Baldwin, secretary-treasurer and managing officer. He was named to succeed Baldwin in 1960 and he was elected president of that association in 1966, holding that office until Jan. 1, 1970. He continued to serve on the board until 1976.

NORMAN was appointed a director of the Fairfield Independent School District in 1952. He was the first president of the Fairfield Community School District, serving until 1961. He also served on the board of the Fairfield Public Library from 1939-1953.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a 53-year member of the Lions Club before ill health forced him to drop out last year. He was also a member of the First United Presbyterian Church, filling a number of offices.

NORMAN was married to Willmetta WRIGHT July 22, 1927 at Salt Lake City. Surviving are his widow and two sons: Ronald NORMAN Jr., Freeport, Ill.; and Dean NORMAN, Medford, Ore. Other survivors are six grandchildren, one great-grandchild and one brother, Howard NORMAN, Gunnison, Utah.
