Dwight Wendell RILEY, 85, of Centerville, died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013 at Golden Age Care Center in Centerville.
He was born the son of Gerald and Florence (SCHOOLEY) RILEY on Feb. 24, 1928 near Packwood in Jefferson County. He graduated from the Packwood High School and later attended Ottumwa Heights to further his education.
Dwight served his country during the Korean Conflict with the United States Navy. On Oct. 18, 1952 he was united in marriage to Dorothy E. SCRIBNER at the Eddyville Christian Church in Eddyville. Dwight worked for many years at Iowa Southern Utilities at the Ottumwa, Iowa Power House and later in 1977 would move to Centerville and became the safety officer. He along with his brother owned Riley Bro. Auction where he was an auctioneer. He was a 50 years Mason and a member of Jackson Lodge No. 42 in Centerville, the Kahaba Shrine Temple in Davenport and Toastmasters International.
Dwight second passion was his love for the Appanoose Country Club where he was a member for over 30 years. He was president of the club three times and served many years on the board. He played a major role in the construction of the automatic watering system. He logged many hours of volunteer time and for all he done for the club, it was decided to rename the road leading up to the clubhouse, Dwight Riley Drive in his honor.
In death, Dwight rejoins his parents; grandson, Nathan RILEY; brothers, Mervin "Rex" RILEY and Verlin Cloyse RILEY.
He is survived by: his wife, Dorothy RILEY of Centerville; sons, Randall C. RILEY and his wife, Cathleen of Springfield, Ill. and Anthony M. RILEY and his wife, Becky of Olathe, Kan.; a daughter, Sandra MILLER and her husband, Dave of Owensboro, Ky.; brother, Muriel "Dean" RILEY of Fairfield; grandchildren, Beth RILEY of Topeka, Kan., Dawn DORSEY of Olathe, Kan. and MacKenzie RILEY of Springfield, Ill.; along with two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013 at the Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville with burial to follow at the Highland Cemetery in Eddyville. Visitation will be held on Monday, Sept. 16, 2013 from 2 p.m. until 8 p.m. with the family present from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and a Masonic Service at 7:30 at the funeral home.
Memorials can be left to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital and can be left at the funeral home. The Schmidt Family Funeral Home in Centerville has been entrusted with caring for Dwight and his family and condolences can be sent at: schmidtfamilyfuneralhome.com.
