Darrell SMUTZ, 66, of Little River, S.C., formerly of Laurinburg, N.C. went to be with our Lord in Heaven on Saturday, October 26th, 2013 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Darrell is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Mary, daughter, Brenda POPE and husband, Michael of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., son David SMUTZ and wife, Angie of Harmony, N.C., grandsons David SMUTZ, Jr and fiancé' (sic) Megan Pierce, Dawson SMUTZ, and Zachary POPE, his father, Keith SMUTZ of Libertyville, IA, sisters Karen WHITHAM and husband Kenny of Fairfield, IA, Diana HUFF and husband Dave of Libertyville, IA and nephews Steve WHITHAM and wife Kim, Scott WHITHAM and wife Kibben, and Michael WHITHAM and fiancé' (sic) Ashley. Darrell was predeceased by his mother Lillie SMUTZ and brother Lyle SMUTZ.
Darrell was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Darrell enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, woodworking, custom picture framing, golfing, and fishing. He worked with the Laurinburg Optimist Club for many years with the youth baseball program, helping to establish the new Optimist Park in Laurinburg. He served for many years as Treasurer and as President in 1987-1988.
Darell graduated from Fairfield High School in Fairfield, IA in 1965. He was a U.S. Army Reserve sergeant, serving from 1965-1970. He attended The American Institute of Business and Drake University in Des Moines, IA and Pembroke State University in Pembroke, N.C. Darrell had a long and successful career, beginning with Armstrong Rubber Company in Des Moines, IA and later in Laurinburg, N.C. Darrell retired from Kordsa, USA in 2011 and moved to Longs, S.C. to enjoy his retirement with Mary and spend time pursuing his hobbies and fishing at the beach. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service wll be held at 1 pm on Tuesday, October 29 in Lee Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regency Hospice, 11943 Grand Haven Drive, Suite A, Garden City, S.C. 29576.
