DROWNED -- On Sunday, July 17th, three girls started from John McCleary’s house, 8 miles west of Fairfield, and 4 miles from Batavia, to cross Cedar Creek for berries. Two of them went into the water to bathe, when they got beyond their depth. The girl on shore threw a stick to one girl, who succeeded in getting out of the water. The other girl was drownded (sic). Her name was Tacy CONGER, aged 14 years. She was an orphan child, and was making her home at Mr. McCleary’s. She has several brothers and sisters. Her body was taken from the water about an hour after she was drowned. Our informants tell us that she was a young girl much esteemed in the neighborhood.

Transcribed from Jefferson County Records, Vol. 2, pp. 310-311, Fairfield City Library, Fairfield, Iowa.

Admin. note: Buried in County Line Cemetery, and the daughter of J.B. and J. CONGER.
