J.W. Merle Bond Decker
February 13, 2004J.W. Merle Bond Decker, 89, of 910 W. Jefferson Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2004, at his home.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Suburban Heights Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ed Parker officiating. Interment will be at Richland Friends Cemetery in Richland.
Visitation, with the family receiving friends, will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at the church.
Memorials have been established to the Suburban Heights Baptist Church or the American Diabetes Association.
Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Decker was born June 18, 1914, in Keokuk County near Richland, the son of William Grant and Joanna Bond Decker.
He married Elinor Nelson June 20, 1935, at the home of her parents in Fairfield.
Mr. Decker lived most of his life in Fairfield. He graduated from Fairfield High School with the class of 1932. He was employed by the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant near Burlington during World War II. Later, he held a position with Heston and Anderson and Norris Construction Company as a foreman. He retired from Harper Brush Works in 1982.
Mr. Decker moved to Douds, where he lived for seven years before returning to Fairfield in 1989.
He attended Suburban Heights Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Berle Decker of Omaha, Neb., and Terrence Decker of Libertyville; one daughter, Marna Benion of Milton, Pa.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Decker was the last of his immediate family. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Snowden Decker; and three sisters, Gertrude McReynolds, Gualetta Hartl and Nova Hendricksen.
