Edgar F. PIERSON

Edgar F. PIERSON, 86, of Milwaukee, formerly of Fairfield, died Friday, Dec. 8, 1995, at Belair Nursing Home in Milwaukee.

The service was Dec. 11 in Stevens Point, Wis., with burial in Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials have been established to Alzheimer's Association, the American Cancer Society and the Pierson Biology Scholarship Fund through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Foundation.

PIERSON was born Aug. 31, 1909, southeast of Fairfield, the son of John E. and Alma S. Phrona ANDERSON PIERSON. He received a bachelor of science degree from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant and master of science and Ph.D degrees from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. On June 6, 1942, he married Grace M. FILTER. During World War II, he served as a captain in the Army Air Corps as a ground school instructor at Goodfellow Field in San Angelo, Texas.

A professor of biology from 1938 until his retirement with emeritus status in 1980, he received several citations at the UW-SP for excellence in teaching. He was known as "Doc PIERSON" to his students because he was one of the few teachers with a Ph.D. when he joined the facility. As an advocate for teachers' causes, he was chosen state president of the organization now known as the Association of University of Wisconsin Professionals. He also served for many years as the Stevens Point facility representative on state college athletic conference committee, and was conference chairman for a time. A UW-SP scholarship in his name is awarded annually to the junior biology major with the best academic record.

Surviving are his wife of Menomenne Falls, Wis.; a son, John Paul of Milwaukee; two grandchildren; and a brother, John C. of Hales Corners, Wis., formerly of Fairfield. A son, James; a sister, Mildred QUICK; and an infant brother preceded him in death.
