Michael J. 'Mike' MILLS

Michael J. "Mike" MILLS, 42, of Mount Pleasant, died Monday, July 8, 2013, in rural Mount Pleasant from injuries in a motor vehicle/pedestrian accident.

Cremation rites have been accorded and there will be no formal funeral service.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends.

Memorials may be made to the Michael Mills Memorial Fund for his children's education.

Mr. MILLS was born April 2, 1971, in Burlington, the son of Edwin Leroy and Sharon Louise SIMPKINS MILLS. He married Terry MILLS in New Mexico. The couple later divorced.

He lived with his family in rural Denmark and Bettendorf, then the family moved to rural Durango, Colo. He grew up in Durango and Farmington, N.M.

He graduated from high school in Hatch, N.M.

He has lived in the Mount Pleasant area since the late 1990s.

Mr. MILLS worked in the construction trade. For the past several years, he was employed with the Robert L. Smith Construction Company. During the winter months, he also worked at Batey's Sawmill in rural Mount Pleasant.

He was a loyal Pittsburg Steeler's fan (sic).

He enjoyed arrowhead hunting and was a keen cribbage player.

He loved socializing with his friends and spending time with his family and children.

Survivors include five children, Chevelle MILLS and Cole MILLS, and their mother, Shelly JACKSON, all of New London, Theresa MILLS of Rincon, N.M., Michael MILLS of Albuquerque, N.M., and Blake STEIN of Winfield; his father, Ed MILLS and his wife Connie of Deming, N.M.; his mother, Sharon MILLS of Farmington, N.M.; two sisters, Melinda MILLS and Melanie MILLS, both of Albuquerque; and one grandson.

Mount Pleasant pedestrian killed while lying on road

MOUNT PLEASANT - A Mount Pleasant man, Michael MILLS, 42, has been identified as the victim in a fatal pedestrian/vehicle accident Monday night 1 mile south of Mount Pleasant on Oakland Mills Road.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, MILLS was lying partially on the traveled portion of the roadway when he was struck by a northbound 1998 Ford F-150 pickup, driven by Caleb Davis, 17, of Mount Pleasant.

Davis told officers that he attempted to avoid MILLS but struck him in the northbound land. The accident occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. A sergeant with the Mount Pleasant Iowa State Patrol office said he "had no idea" why MILLS was lying in the roadway and won't know pending the results of an autopsy.

MILLS was transported by ambulance to the Henry County Health Center. No citations have been issued in the accident, which remains under investigation.

Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Friday at Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. MILLS's obituary appears on page 8.
