Emett Leroy LILES, 87, of rural Selma, died at 11:49 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

Arrangements are pending at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua.

Emett Leroy LILES

Emett Leroy LILES, 87, of rural Selma, died at 11:49 a.m. Monday, May 20, 2013, at Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

A funeral is at 3 p.m. Friday in Eldon Assembly of God Church, with the Rev. John Cooper officiating. Burial, with military honors by John Hyson Reneker American Legion Post in Douds will be in Iowaville Cemetery in rural Selma.

Visitation with family is 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Gifts to a memorial to be designated later by the family may be left at the church or mailed in care of the church to PO Box 369, Eldon 52554.

Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua is handling arrangements.

Mr. LILES was born June 20, 1925, in rural Floris, the son of Charles and Caroline HEWITT LILES. He married Irene DeVORE July 6, 1946, in his family's home.

He served in the U.S. Army in the South Pacific during World War II where he was wounded in action for which he was awarded the Purple Heart medal.

He and his wife purchased their home in rural Selma where they raised six children.

He worked construction many years until he started harness racing. He won many awards including being inducted in the Iowa Harness Racing Hall of Fame.

He was a member of Eldon Assembly of God Church for more than 40 years. He was known for loving God, his family, racing, hunting and telling stories.

Survivors include his wife, Irene; two sons, Tim and spouse Lynne of Muscatine and Randy of Packwood; three daughters, Mary SZELIGA of Eldon, Ginger CHATFIELD and spouse Daniel of Muscatine and Teresa POUSH and spouse Scott of Mountain Home, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gene of Eldon and Paul of Batavia; and two sisters, Naomi LATHROP of Eldon and Pauline LIND of Little Rock, Ark.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Ricky; seven brothers, Albert, Dwight, Frank, Pardon, Everett, Bill and David LILES; and four sisters, Sarah TALBOTT, Mary LILES, Rachel GREENE and Ruth BOLIOU.
