Frieda GRATZON

Frieda GRATZON, 95, of Fairfield, died Saturday, April 13, 2013, in Jefferson County Health Center.

Memorials may be sent to the Frieda Revolutionary Initiative to Enhance the Deficient Acoustics at the Sondheim Theater Fund -- F.R.I.E.D.A.S. Theater Fund. A special account has been opened for this purpose.

Mrs. GRATZON was born April 3, 1918, in New York City, as Freedom HONIXFELD.

She was given the name Freedom as she was the first child in her family to be born in America. Her sixth grade teacher insisted she be renamed Frieda, feeling Freedom was an inappropriate name.

She married Edward GRATZON Oct. 1, 1944 in Yonkers, N.Y. He died in 1991.

She and her husband spent the first 42 years of their marriage in Moorestown, N.J.

They moved to Fairfield in 1986.

She was a life-long activist for racial integration, civil rights and peace.

She was known for her bold fashion designs and her strongly expressed opinions -- which frequently found their way onto the opinion page of The Fairfield Ledger.

She enjoyed dancing and fashion design. She brought English and Scottish country dancing to Fairfield.

Survivors include two sons, Fred of Fairfield and Russell of Philadelphia, Pa.; one daughter, Edna ERSKINE of Aumsville, Ore.; and three grandchildren.
