Funeral for J. DOUGLAS

Julian "Jack" L. DOUGLAS, retired U.S. Army Colonel, died Wednesday at 9:25 p.m. at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City where he had been a patient the past four months.

Last rites will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home with Father Jonathan Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

DOUGLAS retired from military service July 31, 1951 and the family moved to Fairfield in May, 1962. The family home is at 1103 E. Briggs. He was a veteran of both World War I and World War II.

He enlisted in the 1st Illinois Calvary April 10, 1916, and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant March 12, 1917. DOUGLAS went to France with the 131st Infantry in May, 1918, and took part in the first all-American raid of the war July 4, 1918.

Col. DOUGLAS took part in a number of major campaigns during World War I, he received a number of decorations including the Silver Star, and was captured by the Germans Nov. 6, 1918, five days before the Armistice was signed.

Julian "Jack" DOUGLAS, 78, was born July 29, 1894, at New Holland, Ill., the son of Edward Thomas and Ethel Mae ROSS DOUGLAS.

His marriage to Sophia Margaret ROACH took place Oct. 26, 1942. She survives.

Other survivors include two brothers, Leon and Orlaf, both of Lincoln, Ill., and a sister, Mrs. Henry HURLEY, Memphis, Tenn.
