January 29, 2004Helen Arlene Grootveld Lewis, 87, of Mount Pleasant, formerly of Mesa, Ariz., and Packwood, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.
The funeral will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, with the Rev. Todd Holman officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery in Fremont. Fellowship and lunch will follow the burial at the Fremont United Methodist Church.
Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home and continue until the time of the service.
A memorial has been established to Fremont United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Lewis was born April 3, 1916, near Eddyville, the daughter of Jacob and Belle Boonstra Grootveld. She married Ralph L. Lewis April 24, 1942, in Ottumwa.
Mrs. Lewis graduated from Fremont High School and from teachers training. She taught school for three years in Mahaska County. Following her marriage, she farmed with her husband in the Packwood area for 39 years. Her pastimes included spending time with family and friends, bowling and golf.
She was a member of Fremont United Methodist Church, the Sew-n-Sew Club, Canasta club, Krony Krew Club and the Jolly Janes Club.
Survivors include her husband; one son, LaVerne C. Lewis of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Donna S. Cisco of Mount Pleasant and Marsha K. Hess of West Des Moines; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and one sister, Lucille Triplett of St. Paul, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Henry Grootveld; and one sister, Evelyn Day.
