Harold S. Martin

Memorial services for Harold S. Martin, 74, Belle Plaine and formerly of Cedar Rapids, were Friday, Nov. 23, 2001, at Hrabak Funeral Home, Belle Plaine. Mr. Martin died Sunday, Nov. 18, 2001, at his home following a short illness. He had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and was undergoing treatment.

Harold S. Martin was born June 10, 1927, in Fairfield, the son of Earl and Mildred McCormick Martin. After graduating from Fairfield High School in 1944, he joined the Navy for a tour of duty during World War II until 1947. He married Mildred Underwood on April 6, 1947, at Winfield. Before retirement he was employed by Hawkeye Refrigerated Service and other firms as a long haul truck driver. He and Mildred drove as a team for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Belle Plaine, and after retirement he did volunteer work at the Belle Plaine Community Center and the Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center. He was a wonderful husband and father. He was a kind and giving man who never missed an opportunity to tell a funny story or a favorite joke.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; a brother, Donald, Fairfield; two daughters, Kathy Kocer and husband, Robert, Cedar Rapids, and Linda Jenkins and husband, Jeff, Aurora, CO; six grandchildren, Julie Hall, Cedar Rapids, Mike Hall, Iowa City, Samantha Hall, Cedar Rapids, Jill O’Niel and husband, Gene, Denver, CO, Aaron Spratte, Aurora, CO, and Ben Jenkins, Aurora, CO; and several nieces and nephews.
