Mr. Jack Raymond JACOBS, 82, of Burlington died at 7:25 p.m. Thursday, February 7, 2013, at his home.
Born April 27, 1930 in Jefferson County, he was the son of Raymond A. and Arlene J. SCHILLERSTROM JACOBS. On June 21, 1953 he married Betty CRILE at Clara Lutheran Church in Salina.
Mr. JACOBS grew up on the farm in Jefferson County where he was active in Boys 4-H.
He attended a one-room school for grades K-8 and graduated from Fairfield High School.
He served in the National Guard for eight years.
Mr. JACOBS worked for the Soil Conservation Service-Dept. of Agriculture for 15 years in Jefferson and Des Moines Counties.
He and his wife owned and operated the Dairy Sweet in Donnellson for seven years.
He was in insurance and investment sales with Principal Financial Group for 30 years.
After retiring in 1995, he and his wife served as tour guides for American Visions Travel bus tours.
Mr. JACOBS was a member of Des Moines County Extension Council, serving one year as treasurer, Des Moines County Soil Conservation District Commissioner, Christian Action Board of Directors, Cotillion Dance Club, Southeast Iowa Life Underwriters Association for 30 years, Messiah Lutheran Church, serving two terms on Church Council and one year as president, and GRMC Auxiliary.
He also served as a volunteer at Great River Medical Center and a volunteer driver for Mississippi Regional Blood Center.
Survivors include his wife, Betty JACOBS of Burlington; one daughter, Laura (Brian NEWSOME) DETTMAN of Burlington; one son, Scott (Cheryl EDWARDS) JACOBS of Danville; six grandchildren, Jarad DETTMAN of Burlington, Jeremy JACOBS in the Army stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana, Natalie JACOBS of Danville, Hunter VARGASON of Burlington, Brea MULLINS of Danville and Kaushy DAVID of Rochester Hills, Michigan; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law, Lois BROKKEN, Wayne and Loretta DIERS all of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and maternal and paternal grandparents; his brothers-in-law, Wallace BROKKEN and Keith CRILE; and his sister-in-law, Rose CRILE.
Friends may call from noon until 7 p.m. Monday, February 11th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m.
The funeral service for Mr. JACOBS will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 12th, at Messiah Lutheran Church with the Rev. Susanne Smith officiating.
A luncheon will follow the funeral service.
The graveside committal service will be 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 12th, at New Sweden Lutheran Chapel Cemetery, rural Lockridge.
Memorials have been established for Messiah Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund and the Pohren/Crile Scholarship Fund.
