Verna Ruth Boyer, 81, of Keosauqua died at 4 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco, Texas.

The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds, with the Rev. Jerry Caughron officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds.

Visitation will be held from 4-5 p.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua and from 7-8 p.m. Friday at Pedrick Funeral Home in Douds with the family present.

Mrs. Boyer was born May 6, 1922, on the Kerr family farm, west of Birmingham, the daughter of Ira C. and Gertrude Lowe Kerr. She married John W. Jack Boyer June 7, 1941, at Unionville, Mo. He died Aug. 31, 1999.

Mrs. Boyer graduated from Birmingham High School in 1939 and attended Ottumwa Beauty Academy. She farmed with her husband in the Douds community, retired to Douds in 1990 and moved to Country Lane Apartments in Keosauqua in 1999. She wintered in Donna, Texas, with her husband and since his death for 24 years.

She was a 50 year member of Twin City Chapter No. 258 Order of Eastern Star in Douds.

Survivors include two son, Jerry Boyer of Douds and John Boyer of Donna; one daughter, Janet Mellinger of Birmingham; and four grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Veryl Kerr; and one sister, Vida Philips.
