Daisy WHITHAM rite Tuesday

Daisy WHITHAM, 87, longtime resident of Fairfield, died at 3:35 p.m. Sunday, June 5, 1988, at Jefferson County Hospital.

A private family service will be held Tuesday at Raymond Funeral Home with the Rev. Ted Whitham officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will recieve friends from 7 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. A memorial has been established to Whitham Woods.

Miss WHITHAM was born Feb. 16, 1901, west of Fairfield, the daughter of Charles and Iowa Ella McCORMICK WHITHAM. A graduate of Fairfield High School and Parsons College, she received a master's degree from University of Iowa and did graduate work at University of Colorado and University of Chicago.

She began her teaching career at Troy, taught at Creston Junior College, where she was dean of women, taught biology at Joliet, Ill., High School and Junior College for 22 years and was dean of women there. She taught for seven years at Fairfield High School before retiring in 1965. She was a member of the United Methodist church, National Wildlife Federation, and national and state teachers associations.

In 1980, she donated her family's 130-acre farm west of Fairfield on Highway 34 to the Iowa National Heritage Foundation to be used as a plant and animal refuge. The area, Whitham Woods, is maintained by the county conversation board as a public use area. Governor Robert D. Ray presented her with the Governor's Conservation Award that year.

Miss WHITHAM is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers as well as six brothers and sisters in infancy.
