John BEHNE, veteran of World War I, passed away at 2 p.m. today at the Jefferson county hospital after a serious illness of two days.
He had been in failing health the past several months. During the recent war, he was employed at the Ordnance plat at Burlington.
Mr. BEHNE was a member of the local American Legion post and took an active part in its affairs. The body was taken to the Weston Behner funeral home where last rites are pending.

Military rites for John H. BENHE, 58, veteran of World War I, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Weston Behner funeral home. Dr. E. A. Piper will officiate, and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. BEHNE passed away at 2 p.m. yesterday at the Jefferson county hospital where he had been a patient for two days. He had been in failing health the past several months.
The war veteran was born January 13, 1889, in Burlington, Iowa, the son of the late Henry and Sophia BEHNE. He was united in marriage to Rachel PICKETT on November 16, 1925, at Galesburg, Illinois.
Mr. BEHNE had been a resident of the community for over 21 years and was a member of the Lutheran church and the American Legion.
He is survived by his wife and three brothers: Albert, Fremont, Ohio; George, Clyde, Ohio; and Walter, Burlington, Iowa.

Tuesday, March 25, 1947Fairfield — John Henry BEHNE, 58, died suddenly Monday afternoon at the Jefferson county hospital, where he was taken Friday suffering from asthma and a heart attack. Funeral services and full military rites will be held Thursday afternoon, March 27, at 2 o'clock at the Weston funeral home, conducted by Dr. Edward A. Piper of the First Lutheran church. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. BEHNE was born January 13, 1889 in Burlington, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry J. Behne. He had been a resident of Fairfield for the past 21 years. He served in World War I and was employed at the Iowa Ordnance plant during World War II. Behne was married in Galesburg, Ill., to Mrs. Rachel DESPAIN PICKETT, of Fairfield, Nov. 16, 1925. He is survived by his wife and 3 brothers, Albert BEHNE of Fremont, Ohio, George BEHNE of Clyde, Ohio, and Walter BEHNE of Burlington. He was a member of the First Lutheran church and an active member of Allen Jewett Post No. 47, American Legion.

Admin. note: Obituary from the Burlington Hawk-Eye contributed and transcribed by Sarah Thorson Little. John and wife Rachel (who died in 1948) are buried in Lot SDiv.2-001. Rachel DESPAIN was married three times, first to Amon PICKETT, second to Chas./Caleb PICKETT, and third to John BEHNE. Amon died in 1913 and is on the same lot as Rachel, Charles/Caleb was married three times, Rachel being his second wife - he is also buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Lot 2nd.271.
