Wallace G. "Gif" Campbell, 88, of Eldon, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at the Ridgewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Eldon Christian Church, with the Rev. George Conz officiating. Burial will be in Eldon Cemetery.

Open visitation began at 1 p.m. today at the church, with the family present from 6-8 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the church or to Eldon Public Library.

Mr. Campbell was born July 16, 1915, in Fairfield, the son of Wallace and Helen Gifford Campbell. He married Virginia Saltzgaver Oct. 2, 1937, in Ottumwa. She died Aug. 11, 1998.

Mr. Campbell was reared and educated in Eldon and graduated from Eldon High School in 1932. He attended Simpson College in Indianola and later St. Louis College of Mortuary Science in St. Louis, Mo. He owned and operated and was associated with the Campbell Funeral Home in Eldon and Batavia for more than 50 years. He also was a World War II veteran having served in the Army Air Corps.

He was a member of the Eldon Christian Church, Eldon Lions Club, a 50-year member of the Iowa State Funeral Directors Association, a 50-year member of the Kilwinning Masonic Lodge No. 198 of Batavia, Arbor Vitae Order of Eastern Star in Batavia and Fey-En-Hey American Legion Post of Eldon.

Survivors include one son, William D. Campbell of Eldon; one daughter, Vicki Powley of Klamath Falls, Ore.; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Roy Campbell.
