Charles Edwin SMITH, 73, of California and formerly of Fairfield died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in Redwood City, Calif.
A memorial celebration was held Sunday at Peninsula Covenant Church in Redwood City. Memorials may be made to Peninsula Covenant Church, 3560 Farm Hill Blvd., Redwood City, Calif. 94061 or the Lions Eye Foundation, P.O. Box 7999, San Francisco, Calif. 94120. The SMITH home is at 992 Cambridge Road, Redwood City 94601.
Dr. SMITH was born May 14, 1926, in Fairfield, the son of Gilbert and Edith SMITH. He married Esther TRABERT in 1951.
He spent his youth farming and attending schools in the Fairfield area. After serving two years in the Counter Intelligence Corp during the Korean confict, he returned to attend Iowa State University and earned a degree in veternary medicine. He returned to Fairfield in 1958 and went into partnership with Dr. Jay Q. Bell in the Veternary Clinic.
In 1963, Dr. SMITH and his family moved to Redwood City to establish a veterinary practice.
He served his community through the Peninsula Covenant Church, Lions Club, Peninsula Veterinary Medical Association, and Sirs in both service and leadership positions.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Jeff SMITH; four daughters, Deanna MARTINEZ, Lisa PYLE, Jessica DENECOUR and Jeanne ADAM; 11 grandchildren; and two sisters, Joan JONES and Verna YOURD.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
