Obituary Section - Aug. 19, 2001

Mildred Leola CHARLTON ELIAS, 94, died Aug. 18, 2001, in Hallmar Residential Care, Mercy Medical Center, following a short illness. The body was cremated. Graveside services will be held at Parklawn Cemetery, Rockville, MD, at a later date (sic-June 2002). Cedar Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Survivors include a son, Scott “Skipper” Samuel ELIAS of New Lexington, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Iris CHARLTON of San Antonio, Texas; and the following nieces and nephews: Arthur WORLEY and wife Marjorie of Fairfield and their children; Jane KNAPP and husband Paul of Marion; Larry WORLEY and wife Sandra and sons; Shawn and wife Tara of Stockport; Kent and Scott, both of Fairfield; and Marsha WORLEY and Sandra WORLEY, both of Ottumwa.

Also, Dr. Louis Scott CHARLTON and wife Cookie of Sherman, Texas, and their children; Scott CHARLTON Jr. and wife Rose and daughter Hannah of Sydney, Australia; Whitney DUGGAN and husband Kevin and sons Cohn (sic-Colin) and Clay of Fort Collins, Colo.; Ralph William CHARLTON, Jr. and wife Ellen of San Antonio, Texas, and their children; Catherine LENDERS and husband Ron of San Diego, Calif.; Paige BURDEN and husband Tim and children Morgan, Emilie and Shelby, all of Iowa City; and Ralph William CHARLTON, Jr. of Los Angeles.

Also, Dennis SAIDE and wife Judi of Hull, Mass., and children; Donna and Tommy; Joseph SAIDE of Lake Worth, Fla., and daughter Vickie; Mildred J. ELIAS of Lynn, Mass., and daughter Lisa; and Richard SAIDE of Manchester, N.H.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph ELIAS, on Aug. 16, 1982; a sister, Florence Margaret CHARLTON WORLEY; a brother, Ralph William CHARLTON; and a niece, Katheryn Louise WORLEY BOOTH.

Mildred was born Oct. 18, 1906, in Fairfield, the daughter of Scott John CHARLTON and Lena Leola WORKMAN CHARLTON. She graduated from Fairfield High School in 1924 and Ottumwa Business College. She married Joseph ELIAS on Aug. 16, 1938. She lived in Silver Spring, Md., and worked for the federal government in Washington, D.C., until she retired in 1969. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Silver Spring. She returned to Ottumwa in 1996 and moved to Marion in 1999. She enjoyed reading, quilting, and other kinds of needlework. She especially treasured visits with her relatives and friends.

She was a sweet and caring person and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
