E. V. PEIFFER

A 72-year-old Fairfield man died in a fiery crash late yesterday afternoon approximately five miles southeast of the city on the Glasgow Road.

Ernest Vincent PEIFFER, 310 W. Broadway, was pronounced dead at the scene by authorities.

According to the Iowa Highway Patrol, PEIFFER was driving a 1977 Chevrolet pick-up truck owned by his son-in-law, Jerry NELSON, Route One, northbound on the roadway and was pulling a load of grain in a gooseneck trailer.

From witness accounts, authorites speculate a radiator hose on the truck broke and resulted in a considerable amount of steam, which blocked PEIFFER's vision. The truck went into a ditch on the west side of the road, through a fence, came to rest in a pasture at the bottom of the steep ravine and caught fire.

Witnesses told patrolmen that PEIFFER was still conscious after the accident, but was pinned in the vehicle by the steering wheel. They say those first on the scene were unable to free him before the blaze broke out.

The Fairfield Fire Department arrived shortly after the fire started, but efforts to save PEIFFER were unsuccessful.

Ernest Vincent PEIFFER was born Aug. 1908 in Brighton, the son of August C. and Lena FRITZ PEIFFER. He was reared and educated in the Brighton community and lived southeast of Brighton where he farmed for 21 years.

On Aug. 13, 1934, he married Mary Genevieve ROBINSON in Brookfield, Mo. In 1955, their family moved to Fairfield and he was employed by the Fairfield Lumber Company for 22 years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Elks Lodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Surviving are: his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Judy) NELSON of Fairfield; two granddaughters, Jolene and Julie; and one sister, Mrs. Sylvester SOBASKI of Brighton.

Funeral services will be Wed., 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. William Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery at East Pleasant Plain. Prayers for a Christian wake will be recited tonight, 7:30 p.m. at the Raymond Funeral Home.
