Alvin Everett NELSON

Alvin Everett NELSON, 94, died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012.

A memorial service was held Nov. 10 at Thorne Crest with the Rev. Jamie Cameron officiating (sic - in Albert Lea, MN).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Thorne Crest for use in the chapel.

Mr. NELSON was born Jan. 15, 1918, on a farm near Alta, the son of Nels and Agnes PETERSEN NELSON. He married Evelyn Jane PETLON April 19, 1941. She died in 2001. He married Ardys K. SWENSON Jan. 11, 2003.

Mr. NELSON attended Highview Consolidated School north of Alta. He received his bachelor of divinity degree in 1956 and master of divinity degree in 1971, both from Northern Baptist Seminary.

Before he joined the ministry in 1951, he and his wife farmed near Storm Lake. Following in his father's footsteps, he kept a herd of purebred Duroc hogs.

During seminary he and his wife operated the student bookstore for four years.

He was ordained to the Christian ministry in 1956 and served in churches in Fredricksburg, Fairfield, and Holdrege, Neb., for the next 15 years.

In 1971 he became administrator of the Winnebago Baptist Home in Winnebago, Minn.

He and his wife retired in Aurelia in 1980 and later moved to Thorne Crest Retirement Community in Albert Lea, Minn. in 1993.

He served on the board of directors of Fairview Consolidated Schools, was a committee member of Farmer's Home Administration, and was the clerk of Scott Township.

He was a Sunday school teacher and treasurer of Elk Baptist Church. He also served as a member of the Northern Iowa Danish Baptist Youth Board. He was president of the youth group at Elk Baptist Church where he was baptized. He was active at Temple Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher and deacon.

He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and competitive corn husking.

Survivors include his second wife; four children, Jim NELSON and spouse Nan, Jane Ann NELSON, Susan JUMP and spouse Ken, and Frank NELSON and spouse Rosemary; three stepchildren, Joan PORTER and spouse bob, Steve FOGDALL and spouse Bonnie, and Jon FOGDALL; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nine stepgrandchildren; and 11 great-stepgrandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ruth ROSS and Bernadine GASTON; and two brothers, Woodrow NELSON and Floyd NELSON.
