Frank E. Fleagle, 75, of Ottumwa and of Mission, Texas, died at 9:35 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa.

The body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reece Funeral Home in Ottumwa, with the Rev. Lon Lewis officiating. Military services will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post No. 775, Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post No. 3, American Legion. Private inurnment will be in Packwood Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church elevator fund or hospice.

Mr. Fleagle was born Dec. 13, 1928, in Fairfield, the son of Claude and Irene Briggs Fleagle. He married G.L. Sue Sustman of Packwood Dec. 18, 1953.

He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1946 and from Iowa State University with a bachelors degree in science. He received a Cardinal Key for academic achievement. He earned a masters degree and a specialists degree in education from Northeast Missouri State University. He served in the United States Navy aboard the experimental guided missile USS Mississippi battleship as a machinist mate 2nd class.

He was an educator for 37 years, retiring from the Ottumwa public school system in 1992. He taught vocational education and Future Farmers of America at Brighton and Manchester schools. He also was a science teacher at Evans Middle School in Ottumwa and a counselor at Franklin and Washington Junior High schools and for the Ottumwa High School. He was a math instructor at Ottumwa Alternative School, a summer counselor for Indian Hills Community College and VICA instructor at Ottumwa High School.

Awards he received included Outstanding Educator in Iowa, Ottumwa VFW citizen of the year and the Ottumwa Key to the City.

He played guard on the Battleship Mississippi Navy football team and sang in the Navy choir at Great Lakes. He was the OHaras Santa Claus for 17 years.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Ottumwa, Wapello County Historical Museum, Naama Masonic Lodge No. 613 A.F. and A.M. in Brighton, Alumni Association of Iowa State University, alumni of Northeast Missouri State University, a lifetime member of American Vocational Association, National Education Association, ACTE Association Career and Technical Education and he was a past member of Jaycees, Lions and Rotary clubs.

Survivors include his wife; and two brothers, Vern Fleagle of Dewitt and Norman Fleagle of Indianola.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Tim Fleagle; and one sister, Iona Ulrich.
