K. M. ELMORE, 104

Kenneth M. ELMORE, probably the Fairfield area's oldest citizen, died this morning at the Parkview Home in Wayland. He was 104.

Funeral arrangements are pending at the Gould Funeral Home in Brighton.

A longtime resident of Brighton, ELMORE spent more than 40 years in the telephone business. He was a former Brighton mayor and tax assessor.

ELMORE was one of the nation's oldest Shriners. His Masonic affiliation dates from 1907 when he joined Clinton Lodge No. 15 in Fairfield. He joined the Shrine in 1909 and was the senior member of Kaaba Temple.

ELMORE was born April 14, 1880 in a log cabin near Knoxville, Tenn. His father emigrated from Jefferson County, Tenn., to Jefferson County, Iowa and by 1886 he had saved enough money to send for his family. Kenneth was the third of 10 children.

ELMORE observed his 100th birthday in 1980. At that time he maintained his own home, raised bees and drove his own car. He also hunted and fished.

"I can walk a half mile without any trouble," he told a Ledger reporter on his 100th birthday. "I drive at night once in a while but I don't like to...I tend to my own business...I have never been in jail and I have never had a ticket,...I have been driving since Model T days."

ELMORE was a hospital patient only three times in his life: once for an appendectomy in 1913 and twice for treatment of fractures.

Only recently did failing health cause him to give up many of his activities.
