Death Takes W. J. SMITH

Willis J. SMITH, 80, Ottumwa, a former Fairfield resident, died Wednesday at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City.

SMITH served with the Iowa Highway Commission for 43 years. He was district engineer for 20 years, coming to Fairfield in 1955 when the district office was moved here from Ottumwa.

Services will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Ottumwa. Arrangements are in charge of the Jay Funeral Home. The family home is at 404 McCarroll St., Ottumwa.

A veteran of World War I, SMITH joined the Highway Commission on Jan. 1, 1918. He retired as district engineer Feb. 1, 1960 and served on special assignment with the Commission until Oct. 1, 1961 when he was named county engineer of Keokuk County.
