Mary Estelle VANDERSLICE EDWARDS, 95, passed away at 12:40 p.m. Tuesday at 309 E. Burlington where she made her home with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. FULTON. Her death followed a lengthy illness.
A memorial service will be held at a later date for Mrs. EDWARDS with the Raymond Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. EDWARDS was born Jan. 23, 1878, in Dixon, Ill., the daughter of Henry and Annie LEIDY VANDERSLICE. She was reared and educated in Chicago.
In 1911, under sponsorship of the Congregational Church Board, she went to Peking, China, to train kindergarten teachers. In 1915, at Peking, she was married to Dwight EDWARDS who was with the YMCA.
They lived in China until 1949 when they retired and moved to Princeton, N.J.
During World War II Mrs. EDWARDS was interned in a civilian camp in Shanghai in 1943, and was held there until the end of the war.
While in Peking, Mrs. EDWARDS started the Peking Exchange, a venture where the poor women of Peking would do embroidery work which was sold for the women's pay. While they worked their children were cared for in a day nursery.
Her husband died in October, 1967, after which Mrs. EDWARDS came to Fairfield to make her home with the FULTONs. She was a member of Rosedale Chapel, Presbyterian Church, Princeton, N.J.
Mrs. EDWARDS is survived by her daughter, Mrs. FULTON, and eight grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons.
