The Fairfield Ledger, Jan.6, 1897, p. 3. col.7. DEATH OF FIRST SHERIFF. Frederick F.Lyon, at his home in Black Hawk township. Mr. Lyon has been a familiar figure in this county for almost 60 years, his residence dating back to June 5, 1837. He had been a minister of the gospel for more than half a century. For many years he had been chaplain of the Old Settlers Association. Mr. Lyon was born in Otsego county, NY, Aug. 6, 1816. Came to Jefferson county in the early summer of 1837 and a year later was appointed sheriff by the governor, on the organization of the county, and served about two years. For a number of years Mr. Lyon resided in Keokuk county, where he was engaged in farming, but his residence here has been continuous since 1870. Mr. Lyon was married to Rachel F. Harris Nov. 8, 1858 (1838) and they were the parents of 13 children.
