HOWARD Dies At 87, Parsons Benefactor

Hubert E. HOWARD Sr., a member of a pioneer Fairfield family and a major benefactor of Parsons College, died this morning in Northbrook, Ill. He was 87.

Graveside services and burial will be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. The Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Howard resided at the Whitehall North nursing home in Northbrook, where he died. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn C. HOWARD, and three sons: John HOWARD, president of Rockford College, Rockford, Ill.; Charles HOWARD, Indianapolis, Ind.; and Hubert E. HOWARD Jr., Winnetka, Ill. Ten granchildren also survive.

HOWARD was born in Fairfield, the son of Elmer and Marie LAMSON HOWARD. The family home was at 405 S. Main St. Howard graduated from Parsons College in 1909 and received his law degree at Harvard University in 1912.

He was appointed to the Parsons board of trustees in 1942 and played an active role in the affairs of the college for more than two decades. During those years he made many sizable financial gifts to the college.

Howard Dormitory, the first campus building constructed after World War II, is named in his honor.

As a member of the executive committee of the board of trustees, HOWARD was an early supporter of Dr. Millard G. Roberts who became president of the college in 1955. He later broke with the Roberts administration and left the board in 1965.

HOWARD's major business interest was the Binkley Coal Co. of Chicago. He served as president of the firm from 1929 to 1950.

HOWARD served as the first Prohibition director for the State of Illinois under the controversial Volstead Act of 1920. For many years he acted as chief negotiator for U.S. strip-mine operators in dealings with the United Mine Workers Union headed by John L. Lewis.

In 1950, HOWARD was appointed chairman of the U.S. Munitions Board by President Truman.

Following his retirement, HOWARD maintained homes in Scottsdale, Ariz., and Minocqua, Wis.

Graveside services for Hubert E. HOWARD Sr., 87, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in Evergreen Cemetery. This is a change in the time announced.

HOWARD, retired Chicago industrialist, died Wednesday in Northbrook, Ill. A native of Fairfield, he was a major benefactor of Parsons College and a member of the board of trustees for many years.

The service will be conducted by the chaplain of Rockford College. The Raymond Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
