Ellen Anna Baker, 81, of Winfield, formerly of Richland, died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2003, at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield, where she had been a resident for seven years.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Richland, with the Rev. Mary Horras officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.

Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Friday at Gould Funeral Home in Richland.

Memorials may be made to Richland Public Library or Sunrise Terrace Care Center Eden Alternative Initiative.

Mrs. Baker was born Feb. 13, 1922, at Conesville, the daughter of John and Hazel Brent Buser. She married Lawrence Melvin "Bud" Baker April 9, 1941, in the parsonage of the Evangelical and Reformed Church in Washington. He died Feb. 28, 1989.

Mrs. Baker grew up in the Conesville area. She graduated from Conesville High School in 1939. After her marriage, she and her husband spent most of their lives in the Washington area, moving to Fairfield in 1964 and later moving to Richland. She worked at Hy-Vee Food Store in Washington and in Fairfield for 20 years. After the couple's retirement, they showed ponies, participating in the Iowa State Fair several times. Her pastimes included quilting and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Before moving to Sunrise Terrace, she was a member of Prairie View United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, 4C Club and was active with her husband in the Richland Lions Club.

Survivors include three daughters, Beverly E. Coffland and husband Kent of Blairstown, Roberta A. Oswalt and husband Garry of Richland, and M. Catherine Lauderdale and husband Richard of Winfield; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one stepgrandson; one stepgreat-grandson; and one sister, Betty Mason of Richland, Mo.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Larry Eugene Baker; four brothers, John, Grant, Henry and Robert Buser; and two sisters, Hazel Swabenlander and Lela Rohde.
